Where are all the Blue Jays?
A couple of days ago, my neighbour Morlen asked me if I had seen any Blue Jays lately? He wasn't talking about the Toronto baseball team.

No I hadn't, was my reply, in fact come to think of it I haven't seen any Blue Jays at our feeders for some weeks at least. Have you?

We asked Ottawa naturalist and birding expert Tony Beck for his take on the missing birds.

Cotyotes spotted in Forest Hill - Blue Jay areaCoyote similar to this one spotted in our area
A heads up o local residents. There have been several sightings of coyotes in the area. These include one coyote off Canaan Road near the Forest Hill area, one coyote seen walking through a yard in Blue Jay Ridge, and up to eight or nine claims one resident on the vacant lot just south of the corner of Canaan Road and Baseline.

The person from the second sighting thought at first that she saw a wolf. (This photo is not what was seen.) For more on the story, related links and to see the difference between the two animals, click here.

WINTERLUDE - This is the last weekend
This is youir last chance to enjoy the 32nd edition of Winterlude.

The Winterlude festivities take place all weekend in Jacques-Cartier Park, in Confederation Park and along the Rideau Canal. To find out more click here.

Construction for the culvert replacement is now in progress
and is scheduled to last until March 15. "A" marks the spot.

Canaan Road will be blocked off between Baseline and Vinette
(Blue Jay residents and people using Canaan Road south will be most affected however local traffic will be permitted for people entering Forest Hill from the North, or Blue Jay Ridge from the south.)

Katimavik Rockland - Eco Film FestivalCoyote similar to this one spotted in our area - O.K.!
The eleven participants who made up the last Katimavik group worked very hard to put on the Eco Film Festival held at the Optimist Cultural Center. They come from a wide background and from all across Canada, says Heather Darwish, the project leader in Rockland, and now after six months they are all heading back home.

A new group will be arriving in Rockland in a few weeks and then it will be their turn to work within the community and to pick a project. Watch this site for more.

Katimavik offers Canadian youth the opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of communities across Canada through challenging volunteer service programs. For more information about Katimavik, click here. The local Katimavik number is: 613-446-0898.

120 million litres of sewage flows into river
How does it affect Rockland downstream?
R.O.Picard Centre in Ottawa
Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre - Ottawa

The heavy record rains are being blamed for sending millions of litres of raw sewage from the City of Ottawa treatment plant into the Ottawa River. The city estimates 120 million litres of raw sewage and untreated waste water overflowed the sewage system and into the historic waterway on Monday. The Ministry of Environment, Ottawa Public Health and downstream water system operators have been notified of the spill.

What does this mean for Clarence-Rockland?

Hwy. 174 safety audit calls on city to
invest in additional road improvements

This is Highway 174 on November 7, 2001
Highway 174, November 7, 2001. Things haven't changed! (Photo-Patrick Meikle)

Fred Sherwin writes on his "Orleans Online" Web site:
A study conducted to assess safety issues along the eastern portion of Hwy. 174 east of Trim Road, calls on the city to make a number of improvements along the busy roadway which has been the scene of 270 collisions and five fatalities from Jan. 1, 2003 and Dec. 30, 2007.

The majority of the accidents occured along two consecutive sections of the roadway -- from Trim Road to Quigley Hill Road and from Quigley Hill Road to Cameron Street. More...

Commentary by Fred Sherwin:
Debate over Hwy. 174 has long-term ramifications

Fred Sherwin writes on his "Orleans Online" Web site:
A report addressing safety issues along the eastern portion of Hwy. 174 between Trim Road and the border with the United Counties of Prescott-Russell has once again raised the debate over who's responsible for the problem and who should pay to fix it.

Forget for the moment that it took more than two years to complete the study. Two years during which over 100 more accidents took place, according to the statistics contained in the report.

When debating the present and future state of Hwy. 174, there are two main issues that must be considered -- safety and growth.

Crow's Nest or Dog's Breakfast!

Some of you just don't get it, do you? (Photo - Patrick Meikle)
If you are wondering why there is a mess at the end of your driveway, when you come
home on garbage day... For those doubting Thomases who don't think crows can mess up
our garbage... here is proof. This cawing character was caught on Blue Jay Drive the day
before garbage pick-up. The owner had put the refuse out the night before, but did not put
a lid on the can, giving our black-feathered friends plenty of opportunity to mess up. Delicious!
To avoid this mess, please put your garbage bags in a garbage can, and use the cover.

promotional material that "Xplornet" keeps pumping
